  • EREWASH WIDE: Erewash Borough Council has warned residents to be on their guard and never give personal bank details over the phone amid reports of a nationwide telephone ‘scam’. Police are investigating incidents across the country, including Derbyshire, in which a conman calls residents to inform them that they have overpaid Council Tax and then requests full bank details so a refund can be issued.

Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Finance, Cllr David Stephenson, urged local residents to report any such calls to the police.  “These calls are not genuine - Erewash Borough Council would never make unsolicited calls in this way. Please do not give any bank details over the phone. We understand this nasty scam is happening across the country and people have fallen victim to it. We urge our residents to be alert and please pass on this warning to all family and friends.  If any of our staff do have cause to ring, they will always willingly give their full name and anyone in any doubt should take the name and then contact Erewash Borough Council to confirm their identity.”  Residents can contact the Council on 0845 907 2244.
